Most Melbourne business owners have a vague feeling that their website is not working as hard as it should. Fewer enquiries than expected. Lower Google rankings than competitors. Visitors who arrive and leave without getting in touch.
The problem is almost never mysterious. It is usually one of six things - and you can identify all of them in 20 minutes with no technical knowledge required.
Here is exactly how to do it.
The Mobile Test
Pull your website up on your actual phone. Not a desktop browser. Your phone.
- Does it load within 3 seconds?
- Can you read the text without pinching to zoom?
- Can you tap buttons and links without accidentally hitting the wrong one?
- Is the phone number tappable - does it open your dialler when you tap it?
- Does the navigation menu work?
If the answer to any of these is no, you have a problem worth fixing immediately. In 2026, Google primarily ranks the mobile version of your site. A site that looks fine on desktop but breaks on mobile is actively costing you search traffic.
The Speed Test
Go to pagespeed.web.dev and enter your URL. Free, instant, no login required.
What to look for:
- Mobile performance score above 70 (above 90 is excellent)
- First Contentful Paint under 2.5 seconds
- Largest Contentful Paint under 4 seconds
If you score below 50 on mobile, your site is losing visitors before they finish reading your headline. Google uses speed as a ranking signal - a slow site ranks lower and converts worse. Both problems with one fix.
The most common culprits: uncompressed images, too many plugins, cheap hosting, no caching. Most are fixable without a full rebuild.
The 5-Second Clarity Test
Look at your homepage as if you have never seen it before. Can a stranger immediately answer these three questions?
- What does this business do?
- Who is it for?
- What should I do next?
If any of these require scrolling, reading multiple paragraphs or guessing, your homepage has a clarity problem. This is the single most common issue on Melbourne small business websites. Your headline and sub-headline should answer all three questions before anything else on the page.
The SEO Basics Check
Right-click on your homepage and select View Page Source. Press Ctrl+F (Cmd+F on Mac) and search for these three things:
"title" - Your page title should contain your main keyword and your city. Example: "Plumber Melbourne | ABC Plumbing Services". If yours just says "Home" or only your business name with no keywords, that is a problem.
"description" - Your meta description is the text that appears under your link in Google search results. It should be a clear, specific 1–2 sentence summary that includes a keyword and gives someone a reason to click.
"h1" - You should have exactly one H1 tag on your homepage and it should contain your main search term. Zero or five H1 tags are both issues.
Then Google your business name. Does your website appear? Then Google your main service plus Melbourne. Where do you rank? If you are not on page one for your core service, that gap is worth understanding.
If you have not set up Google Search Console yet, do it today. It is free and shows you exactly which search terms are bringing people to your site.
The Trust and Contact Check
Ask yourself these questions honestly:
- Is your phone number visible on the homepage without scrolling?
- Is there a clear button or form that makes the next step obvious?
- Do you have any reviews, testimonials or client logos visible?
- Is there an About section that mentions a real person or team?
- Are there photos of real people connected to the business?
Trust signals are one of the most underestimated conversion factors on small business websites. People in Melbourne buy from businesses they feel they know. A faceless, review-free website converts at a fraction of the rate of one that shows real humans, real results and real social proof.
The Competitor Check
Search for your main service plus Melbourne. Look at the top 3 results. Open each one and compare:
- Is their design more modern and professional than yours?
- Is their content more specific and useful?
- Do they show more trust signals - reviews, case studies, team photos?
- Is their call to action clearer?
You are not trying to copy competitors. You are establishing what the bar looks like in your category. If the top 3 results are meaningfully better than your site in any of these areas, that gap is costing you business every week.
What to Do With Your Results
If you found three or more issues in this audit, your website is actively losing you enquiries. Not in a vague, hypothetical way - in a real, measurable way that compounds every week it goes unfixed.
The good news is that most of these problems are fixable. A slow site often does not need a full rebuild - just image compression and better hosting. A clarity problem on the homepage is usually a copy and layout change. Missing SEO basics can be added in a day.
